The Chemistry of LifeChapter 2 focuses on "the chemistry of life." What exactly does chemistry even have to do with biology? Well, simply put, EVERYTHING, including living things, is made of the same "stuff." The stuff that makes up all of the living and non living things can be found in the periodic table - elements. So, if you work backwards from organisms, to organ systems, to organs, to tissues, to cells, to organelles, to organic molecules, to molecules, to atoms..... you begin to leave what we define as life, and arrive at what we know as chemistry.
If we are going to understand life, we ultimately need to understand the structure and interactions of the basic units that are the basic building blocks of living things. This chapter looks at the structural building blocks (atoms, molecules, organic molecules) of living things. It also looks at how those building blocks interact and react with each other to provide not only form - but function in living things. |

Cool videos related to this chapter
A little something to make your brain hurt.....
Documentary that looks at the biggest things (stars, galaxies, universe(s) and then looks at the smallest things - atoms, subatomic particles, and still smaller things.
A great video that examines our search for particles even smaller than protons, neutrons and electrons..... and the machine we use to find the answers - a particle accelerator.
A pretty cool song about one of the tiny particles scientists are searching for with particle accelerators. Watch the Higgs Boson Video first so the song makes a little more sense.
