Gregor Mendel and an introduction to genetics
In this chapter we are introduced to the basic principles of genetics. Genetics is the study of biological inheritance - how are biological traits passed from one generation of organisms to the next? How do your parents pass genetic traits to you, and how might those traits be passed on to your offspring in the future?
We primarily will focus on Gregor Mendel and his experiments with pea plants. Mendel was the first person to formulate an explanation for how certain traits are passed on and he could use his model to predict the offspring when certain parents were crossed with each other. We will finish by looking at examples beyond simple dominant/recessive traits. Most traits are more complex than many of the simple examples we will study. |
