Meisosis
Chapter 11 - Section 4:
Meiosis is the process eukaryotic organisms use to produce sperm or egg cells used in sexual reproduction. There are two important aspects of meiosis. First, Meiosis produces cells with half the genetic information (1N, Haploid). This is necessary so that when sperm and egg cells combine they produce 2N/Diploid cells. Secondly, Meiosis also reshuffles the genetic information a parent passes to offspring and is responsible for a tremendous amount of genetic diversity from one generation to the next. Meiosis and sexual reproduction are responsible for the diversity of life on Earth. |
