What is Science... and why does it matter?
|
Reality vs. Perception:
An interesting fact about the human mind is this - the more you hear something, the more you are likely to accept or believe it. This is regardless of your opinion on the topic or how interested you are in the subject. Simply hearing something, over and over and over, increases the likelihood that you will believe it to be true. What does any of this have to do with science? Well, science and critical thinking help us to first recognize that these "thinking errors" are present in all of us. And, secondly, they are tools to allow us to analyze and overcome our brain's natural tendency toward shortcuts and mistakes. Consider the world around you, and what you hear about it. Are things in our country/the world getting better or worse than they used to be? |
